What is MotoOwl?
In a few words MotoOwl is a cornering lights solution which can be installed on any motorcycle. But there is more to it.MotoOwl cornering lights solution enables any rider to use their already installed fog lights / auxiliary lights or instal brand new ones and convert them into cornering lights. So far we have not found any lights that could not be connected to MotoOwl so your choice options are literally endless!
Once MotoOwl module is installed as per the included instruction, it is ready for use immediately. We said there is more to it and here you have it!The extra features which we added to the MotoOwl product family are SlowStop and HazardStop. What is it for and how does it work?SlowStop is a signal emitter which will flash your rear (brake) lights to inform other road users that your motorcycle is decelerating.HazardStop, similarly to SlowStop, is a signal emitter which will flash your hazard lights (indicators) when you are slamming your brakes in an emergency situation and your motorcycle is decelerating at a very significant rate, to inform other road users that your motorcycle is performing emergency stop.
The difference is that HazardStop will trigger when deceleration rate is much bigger than for SlowStop, hence it is designed to work with hazard lights (indicators). You may say "I have the brake leaver for it".
Yes you have, but does it turn on your brake light when you rapidly slow down when dropping the gears or simply releasing the throttle without grabbing the brake leaver; or does it turn on your hazard lights when you are slamming your brakes?
If you have a brand new top of the list motorcycle then there is a chance that it does. But if you own a sportbike, a chopper, an ADV, a streetbike or scooter that lost its factory shine and has seen a few summer openings already, then the answer is - no.
And this is where SlowStop and HazardStop comes with help.MotoOwl, SlowStop and HazardStop are built on the base of a gyroscope and accelerometer which are constantly calculating the angle and speed changes of your motorcycle in motion.
This enables the MotoOwl module to read live measures and translate them into certain actions to trigger relevant lights.
MotoOwl can be wired directly into your factory brake light, hazard lights (indicators) or additionally installed lights. How you want to instal them, it is entirely your choice, but we will provide installation guides, recommendations and instructions included in the box to help you make your choice easier.So...
Will MotoOwl allow you to switch off thinking when riding your two wheels? - No.
Will MotoOwl make your motorbike faster or more powerful? - No.
But MotoOwl will surely increase your visibility and safety on the road and make your wife, husband, parents, cat, dog, snake, angry next door neighbour or anyone who cares about you, feel a little bit more comfortable knowing that you will come back home safely.
And we will give you cool reflective MotoOwl stickers to further enhance your visibility!Ride safely and see you on the road!
MotoOwl for Cars? Yes!
The Regulation (EU) 2019/2144 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 27 November 2019 on type-approval requirements for motor vehicles and their trailers, and systems, components and separate technical units intended for such vehicles, as regards their general safety and the protection of vehicle occupants and vulnerable road users, defines emergency stop signal as “a light-signalling function to indicate to other road users to the rear of the vehicle that a high retardation force is being applied to the vehicle relative to the prevailing road conditions”.(1)The above EU regulation requires all new vehicles from groups M and N (2) registered from 6 July 2022, to have, among other safety features, factory installed emergency stop signal (light).Studies show that the use of flashing emergency lights (instead of conventional brake lights) in emergency braking situations shortens the braking reactions of drivers by up to 0.2 seconds on average. At a speed of 80km/h (50mph), the stopping distance is thus shortened by around 4.40 meters, and at a speed of 100km/h (62mph), by around 5.50 meters. This shows that emergency brake lights are an effective safety feature for reducing the risk of rear-end collisions. While MotoOwl's cornering lights solution is designed specifically for motorcycles, SlowStop and HazardStop can be installed not only in motorcycles but also in any and all cars registered before 6 July 2022, enabling them to implement the emergency stop light solution and increase safety of the driver, the passengers and other road users. With that being said MotoOwl opens this life saving feature's availability to all cars and drivers allowing to minimise the risks of rear-end collisions and contribute to decreasing the rate of fatalities.
Our Story
MotoOwl started as a DIY project built on the desk next to the laptop of an IT guy whose passion for motorcycle was reaching back in his days further than he could remember. If you have some riding experience, you already know that except of your skills; elements like motorcycle type, tires, ground clearance, and other items come into play when you take the turn and lean your motorcycle.
But once the sun goes down, your perception is different and one thing you can't oversee is what lies on the ground when you take that turn and behind it, simply because you cannot see it.For many years cornering lights were the car thing. In recent years motorcycle manufacturers developed this feature and implemented in the brand new, top of the list models making it available only to some. But what about the rest of us bikers? Whether you ride a street bike, or a scooter, an ADV, or a chopper, and whether it's on the tarmac or gravel, city or off-road. We all want to see more. The idea came up during a motorcycle trip from Ireland to Spain, riding day and night. While days were easy, the evenings and nights on the other hand were more challenging, especially when riding through the west Pyrénées and taking these sharp and dark turns. The prototype originally was built based on widely available electronic components and microchip.
Soon after initial indoor tests it landed on a more durable for outdoor testing materials and has been moved to the second phase - real life outdoor testing. This phase's testing has been performed on a Honda VFR800X CrossRunner.
After small adjustments to the lean angles, reaction times etc., MotoOwl made through to the next stage - sample testing. For this we engaged a number of bikers with different motorcycles.Tests were performed on:
Honda VFR800X CrossRunner
BMW R850GS Adventure
Suzuki GSX1250
Keeway Zahara 125After additional adjustments based on the feedback from different types of motorcycles used for sample testing, MotoOwl has been scheduled for the Pilot Phase.
We are now, together with a software house and hardware manufacturer located in EU, working to design the final version of the module which will be small and durable to be securely installed on any motorcycle. The Pilot Phase is planned to be funded through KICKSTARTER project, hence we invite you to see our project there and we would very much appreciate your support via the KICKSTARTER's project link below.
